Atelier Plume: handcrafted creations between France and India

The encounter with its first artisans in India marked a turning point in Atelier Plume's history. From this collaboration emerged a new vision of handcrafted creation, founded on exchange, the transmission of know-how, and meticulous attention to detail. Through regular trips to India, the brand refined its identity and developed a unique world, deeply inspired by the country's rich cultural and artistic heritage.

Over the years, Atelier Plume has built a network of partner workshops in Delhi, Jaipur, Gujarat, and as far south as Tamil Nadu in India. Each region brings its own heritage, techniques, and pace of work. The textile collections, in particular, come to life in Pondicherry, respecting local artisanal traditions and time-honored manufacturing methods.

Rajasthan, an iconic region in northwest India, is now at the heart of Atelier Plume's jewelry creations. Nicknamed the land of kings, this territory is renowned for its historical expertise in working with precious and semi-precious stones. Emerald, garnet, agate, amethyst, topaz, ruby, and turquoise are among the gems selected to create unique, handcrafted pieces.

Claire travels to India twice a year to develop new collections, carefully selecting each stone and working closely with the artisans. With over seven years of regular presence in India, she has built lasting partnerships based on trust, quality, and creativity. This close relationship ensures authentic, ethical creations deeply rooted in Indian craftsmanship.

Handmade jewelry between Nantes and Jaipur

L'AP jewelry tells a unique story, born between Nantes and Jaipur. Each creation is conceived in France, in Claire's Nantes workshop, then handcrafted in Jaipur, in northern India, at the heart of an ancestral jewelry-making tradition.

Jaipur, the historic capital of Rajasthan, is renowned for its expertise in working with precious and semi-precious stones. Inspiration is everywhere: in the colors, the materials, the precise gestures of the artisans, and the vibrant energy of the city. This rich cultural heritage nourishes each jewelry collection, giving rise to pieces that are sensitive, luminous, and deeply meaningful.

Atelier Plume draws its strength from this encounter between two territories, between French design and Indian craftsmanship. Over the years, Claire has built a relationship of trust with talented artisans, with whom she develops handmade jewelry, designed to last and be passed down.

The collections feature jewelry in 18-karat gold-plated brass, 925 sterling silver, and 9-karat gold. Each piece is adorned with natural stones carefully selected for their brilliance and symbolism. Delicate bracelets, slender rings, luminous necklaces, elegant earrings… Each piece of jewelry is designed as a modern talisman, to be worn every day.

Designed for free women, travelers, dreamers and lovers of authentic pieces, Atelier Plume jewelry accumulates and is collected like fragments of personal history, between Nantes and Jaipur.

Handmade ready-to-wear inspired by India

Atelier Plume ready-to-wear was born from a deep fascination with Indian textile craftsmanship. In India, working with fabric is a living heritage, deeply rooted in culture and daily life. Each region has its own traditional techniques, perpetuated by cooperatives and artisan workshops that pass on their know-how from generation to generation.

During her travels in northern India, Claire discovered the richness of handcrafted textiles: vibrantly colored sarees, hand-embroidered kantha blankets, hand-spun khadi cotton, hand-block prints, and delicate embroidery. These noble materials and ancestral techniques became a major source of inspiration and gave rise to a new dimension for the brand.

Atelier Plume's ready-to-wear collection is a natural extension of the jewelry world. Each garment is designed as a statement piece, blending contemporary cuts with traditional Indian fabrics. Textile creation relies on direct collaborations with local workshops, in an approach that respects the artisans and their techniques.

Today, certain pieces have become emblematic of the Atelier Plume wardrobe: the Dodgers jacket, the Mija dress, and the Geeta shirt. These essential designs embody a ready-to-wear style for women that is both timeless and unique, crafted from artisanal textiles and inspired by the colors and energy of India.

Essential items revisited, designed to accompany everyday life with softness, personality and authenticity, and to weave, through each seam, a link between French creation and Indian craftsmanship.

Claire Caillard, founder and artistic director of L'Atelier Plume

Claire Caillard grew up in an environment deeply influenced by culture and creativity. The daughter of a sound engineer and a porcelain painter, she developed an artistic sensibility at a young age, nurtured by music, visual arts, and a keen eye for detail. This dual influence, both technical and poetic, shaped her perspective and her aesthetic standards. A graduate in communication and cultural project design, with a Master's degree in Art History, she furthered her studies with a specialization in Fashion as Design: Icons and Silhouettes from MoMA, focusing on the history of forms, volumes, and iconic figures in fashion. This training reinforced her approach to clothing and accessories as cultural objects in their own right, imbued with meaning and identity. She began her career in the cultural sector, where, for nearly ten years, she led the artistic direction and communication for public institutions, designing visual identities, campaigns, scenography, and graphic universes. This experience shaped his mastery of visual storytelling and brand image building.

In 2015, she founded L'Atelier Plume and developed an independent brand at the crossroads of art direction, product development, and strategic management. She oversees the overall vision: creating jewelry and ready-to-wear collections, defining the brand identity, sourcing materials, collaborating directly with workshops in India, and art directing photoshoots. Over the years, Claire has built comprehensive expertise in creating and developing fashion and lifestyle brands, working between France and India. She also provides art direction to other fashion houses, designs capsule collections for established brands, and teaches art direction and visual storytelling. Through L'Atelier Plume, Claire champions a demanding yet sensitive vision of creation. She conceives each collection as a coherent narrative, where jewelry and textile pieces become contemporary talismans, imbued with art, culture, and craftsmanship.

Made in India: a commitment to craftsmanship and ethics

At L'AP, Made in India is a strong and deliberate choice. Much more than an indication of origin, it represents a human commitment, a lasting collaboration, and a genuine relationship of trust with small-scale artisan workshops.

It is in India, from Jaipur to Delhi, from Gujarat to Tamil Nadu, that the majority of the jewelry and ready-to-wear collections come to life. Each creation is handcrafted using traditional techniques passed down through generations. The pieces undergo several stages of production, carried out with precise, slow, and respectful movements.

Atelier Plume works directly with Indian artisans renowned for their expertise in jewelry and textile craftsmanship. From cutting precious and semi-precious stones and setting them, to gilding, weaving, embroidery, and hand-printing on textiles, each step is carried out with exacting standards and meticulous attention to detail. Nothing is mass-produced; each piece of jewelry and each garment is the result of a dialogue between French design and Indian craftsmanship.

Producing in India also allows for the selection of the finest materials: natural stones chosen one by one, 18-karat gold-plated brass, 925 silver, 9-karat gold, and hand-woven or hand-embroidered fabrics. Claire regularly visits India to oversee the production of the collections, refine the details, and guarantee a high level of quality.

Claiming "Made in India" means valuing a living artisanal heritage and supporting a local economy based on the transmission of skills. In contrast to mass production, L'Atelier Plume champions ethical, responsible, and sustainable manufacturing that respects artisans, traditions, and production rhythms.

Choosing an L'AP creation means wearing a piece of jewelry or ready-to-wear clothing crafted with time, care, and the soul of those who made it. It's a meeting of minds between Nantes and India, between contemporary standards and ancestral heritage.
